The final episode of The Shadow Sovereign confirms that Zhaoyang and Shen Xiao succeed in breaking the major aristocratic families’ monopoly on power and establishing a new system within the dynasty. The ending sees Lesheng ascend the throne after the emperor’s death. Freed from her obligations at court, Zhaoyang chooses to live alongside Shen Xiao, who survives his health crisis and becomes chancellor.
The confrontation with the aristocratic families
With the emperor gravely ill, Lesheng serves as temporary regent. The major families demand Shen Xiao’s punishment, accusing him of mobilizing the Shence Guard without authorization. To avoid putting Lesheng and Zhaoyang in a difficult position, Shen Xiao turns himself in and is imprisoned.
Zhaoyang visits him in his cell and confesses her feelings. After hearing her confession, Shen Xiao asks to become her prince consort. Although Zhaoyang worries because he is supposedly expected to live for only three more days, Shen Xiao tells her that he already has a plan to resolve the situation.
To break the deadlock with the nobility, Zhaoyang and Lesheng host a banquet. During the event, Shen Xiao appears and reveals that the Shence Guard was mobilized under the emperor’s direct orders.
Zhaoyang presents the aristocratic families’ genealogical records and threatens to burn them, which would destroy the foundations of the clans’ power. She argues that talented scholars from humble backgrounds should also be given the opportunity to serve the country. The crown princess, representing the influential Zheng family, declares her support for Lesheng and the new system. Under mounting pressure, the other families eventually yield. Following the agreement, the crown princess leaves the court to devote herself to Buddhism and atone for her sins.
The emperor’s death and Lesheng’s rise
The family conflict reaches its climax when Zhaoyang visits the emperor on his deathbed. She expresses her hatred for him and directly blames him for her mother’s death. Their heated confrontation further weakens the emperor, and he dies shortly afterward. With no opposition remaining from the major families, Lesheng ascends the throne without difficulty, cementing the shift in power.
The fate of Zhaoyang and Shen Xiao
With her brother on the throne, Zhaoyang finally achieves her main goal: permanently withdrawing from political affairs and living life on her own terms. Shen Xiao, who outlives the prediction of his imminent death, becomes chancellor of the new dynasty.
Their relationship becomes public knowledge throughout the court. In the final scene, Zhaoyang and Shen Xiao are shown releasing lanterns together. Shen Xiao once again insists on being formally named her prince consort, but Zhaoyang refuses. She prefers for him to remain simply her lover, arguing that making their relationship official through marriage would take away the freedom and enjoyment they currently share.
