Spoiler warning: This article reveals the ending of Overdo, including the outcome of Zhang Mingshu’s plan and Murong Qingyi’s ultimate fate in the final scene.
The final episode of Overdo focuses on the conclusion of the poisoning plot orchestrated by the Zhang family. The finale answers the audience’s biggest question: what happens during the final confrontation between Murong Qingyi, Ren Susu, and the antagonist Zhang Mingshu.
The story ends without any cliffhangers, delivering definitive consequences for its main characters.
The Funerals and the Promise
The episode begins by bringing closure to the stories of the fallen allies. Li Baize is buried beside Murong Qingyu’s grave, while Ye Zhihong, who died aboard a military aircraft, is laid to rest beside her as well. After arranging the funerals, Ren Susu and Murong Qingyi make a promise to each other at the cemetery. He gives her a ring that he has carried with him for ten years, and they agree to leave the conflict behind once the final threat has been eliminated.
The Red Pill Attack
The tension escalates when Zhang Mingshu joins forces with the remaining Japanese troops. His plan is to use the city’s festival as an opportunity to spread an enhanced version of the “red pill” poison and seize control of the region.
Murong Qingyi and Ren Susu identify Mingshu’s two targets: the festival’s water supply and the city’s main water treatment plant. The teams split up. Ren Susu positions herself at the festival and manages to neutralize the Zhang family’s assassins. Despite suffering serious injuries, she and her team protect the water supply, eliminate the remaining enemies, and destroy the warehouse where the poison is being stored.
Zhang Mingshu’s Confession
Murong Qingyi’s group heads to the water treatment plant with Lai Yi. Lai Yi is killed after taking a bullet meant for Qingyi, fired by an attacker hiding in the shadows.
During the final confrontation, the truth behind several unresolved events is finally revealed. After faking his death and stabbing Qingyi, Zhang Mingshu takes responsibility for several deaths and tragedies throughout the story:
The murder of Murong Feng.
The death of Huo Zongqi, for which Ren Susu was framed.
The manipulation that drove Huo Minxian to murder his fiancée, Fang Mulan.
The conflicts he created between the Murong family and other factions to divert attention away from the investigations.

Defeating the Villain
The physical confrontation ends with a devastating fall. When Zhang Mingshu attempts to pour the poison into the water pipes, Murong Qingyi pushes him, causing both men to fall from a great height and triggering the explosives planted throughout the facility.
With the area engulfed in flames and both men severely injured, Murong Qingyi overpowers the antagonist one final time. Zhang Mingshu meets his end when Qingyi forces him to swallow an entire vial of his own poison.
What Happens in the Final Scene
The series confirms a tragic ending. Ren Susu goes to their agreed meeting place at the festival and receives a box from a young girl, leading her to realize that Qingyi is still inside the water treatment plant.
Inside the burning building, Murong Qingyi succumbs to his injuries. The sequence alternates between the reality of the fire and a hallucination experienced by Qingyi. In the vision, he witnesses a perfect wedding between Murong Qingyu and Ye Zhihong and receives his family’s blessing to live peacefully with Ren Susu.
However, the story clearly distinguishes fantasy from reality: Murong Qingyi loses consciousness and does not escape the fire, bringing the series to a definitive and tragic conclusion.
