The historical Chinese drama “Overdo” has a confirmed premiere date of July 19, 2026. Based on the novel “If I Hadn’t Met You in This Second” by Fei Wo Si Cun, the series will be co-broadcast on streaming platforms iQIYI and WeTV. The production stars actors Zhang Linghe and Wang Churan.
The Story of Murong Qingyi and Ren Sùsù
Set in Republican-era Shanghai, the narrative follows Murong Qingyi (Zhang Linghe), the son of a powerful warlord who faced abuse growing up after being mistakenly swapped in infancy. During his youth, he is saved by Ren Sùsù (Wang Churan), an event that leads to tragic consequences for her family.
The plot fast-forwards to their reunion years later. The dynamic intensifies when Sùsù, in an attempt to save someone else, fakes her own death and disappears. Three years after this event, she returns to Qingyi’s life under a new family dynamic: she is about to marry his brother, becoming his sister-in-law.
From this point on, the story follows the reckoning between the two characters, focusing on uncovering past motivations and rebuilding their alliance to face an imminent armed conflict threatening the region.

Production, Behind the Scenes, and Script Adaptation
Directed by Yi Jun, “Overdo” is a co-production between iQIYI, Tencent Video, and Beijing Yijie Culture. Filming took place between June 25 and September 28, 2025. The final script was written by the trio Luo Junyue, Yang Siting, and Liu Yuxi.
During the post-production process in March 2026, the team confirmed a reduction in the total number of episodes, cutting it down from 36 to 33. This adjustment was made to comply with local regulatory requirements—requiring the softening of elements related to military conflicts and controversial family ties from the original novel—and to streamline the show’s pacing by removing secondary subplots.
In the week of its release, data from Chinese platforms indicated that “Overdo” had surpassed 9 million pre-registrations combined across the two streaming services broadcasting the show.
