The medical drama “Iryu Team Medical Dragon” (2006) is a Japanese production originally broadcast on Fuji TV. Based on the manga created by Akira Nagai and illustrated by Taro Nogizaka, the series explores the inner workings of a university hospital through highly complex surgeries and internal political conflicts.

The first season consists of 11 episodes and is currently available on Netflix. The success of the television adaptation led to three more sequels, released in 2007, 2010, and 2014.

What is Iryu Team Medical Dragon about?

The story focuses on Ryutaro Asada, a brilliant cardiac surgeon with experience leading free medical services in international refugee camps for MSAP. He returns to Japan and accepts an invitation to work at Meishin University Hospital.

In his new role, Asada must assemble an elite team, the Medical Dragon Team, with the goal of performing the country’s first Batista surgery, a complex left ventricular reduction procedure. Along the way, the series exposes and criticizes the Japanese medical system, addressing rigid hospital hierarchies, structural corruption among professors, and the cover-up of medical errors at the expense of patient care.

Cast and Characters

The Batista Team and the supporting staff at Meishin University Hospital feature characters specialized in their respective roles:

• Kenji Sakaguchi plays Ryutaro Asada: The lead surgeon and team leader. He confronts the hospital hierarchy and the professors’ authoritarianism to ensure patients receive proper treatment.
• Izumi Inamori plays Akira Kato: An associate professor of cardiothoracic surgery. She invites Asada to help with her research on ventricular reduction surgery and seeks to advance in her career to reform the corrupt department, changing her own practices over the course of working with the surgeon.
• Teppei Koike plays Noboru Ijuin: A young doctor forced onto the team by Asada. Initially resistant, he matures professionally and earns the leader’s trust through his meticulous work and attention during surgeries.
• Kuranosuke Sasaki plays Keisuke Fujiyoshi: A physician responsible for planning postoperative treatment for the team’s patients. After being saved by Asada, he joins the group focused on medical education.
• Asami Mizukawa plays Miki Satohara: A highly skilled scrub nurse who has worked with Asada since their university days. She stands out for her exceptional coordination and loyalty to the surgeon.
• Sadao Abe plays Monji Arase: A brilliant anesthesiologist known as the “Monster Cat.” Traumatized by his involvement in unethical experiments in the past, he is rescued from his isolation by Ryutaro, and the two form a “golden duo” in surgery.

The story also features Kazuki Kitamura as Gunji Kirishima, Asada’s former rival who resorts to unfair methods; Ittoku Kishibe as the authoritarian Professor Takeo Noguchi, a symbol of hospital corruption; and Mari Natsuki as Shoko Kito, an emergency physician who assists Asada with his proposal for electoral reform at the institution.
